Introduction
The Directorate of Medical Education and Research came into existence independently on May 1, 1970. The Directorate operates and controls 52 institutions in the state, including 35 government medical colleges, affiliated hospitals, and 4 government dental colleges and 13 Nursing Colleges. The main duty of this department is to provide undergraduate and postgraduate medical education to students of government medical colleges and to make them socially useful doctors.
The second duty is to provide necessary facilities in these medical colleges as per the standards of the Indian Council of Medical Sciences and to maintain the standard of education and to provide referral services to the patients. Research on patients, diseases and related matters is an integral part of this department.
Mission
The Directorate of Medical Education and Research is primarily responsible for imparting medical/dental education and along with this educational work, it also provides primary and specialized health services through the hospitals attached to the medical college. The Directorate provides (1) Medical Education (2) Dental Education (3) Nursing Education (4) Para-medical Education etc.
Maharashtra is a developed state in the country for medical education and education is provided in the faculties of Allopathy, Ayurveda, Dentistry, Homeopathy and Unani. A total of 350 colleges are available in all these faculties and these colleges are in the field of government, semi-government, private aided-unaided and recognized universities. These colleges provide facilities for education in all specialties and super-specialties from the above faculties.
